Bench Leads Tigers to 71-59 Win over West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Brittany Weathers' seventh double-double of the season along with 17 points from Nikkia Jordan lead the University of West Alabama women's basketball team to a 71-59 win over West Florida on Sunday afternoon at Pruitt Hall. Weathers posted a team-best 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the victory.

The duo combined for 35 of the Tigers' 46 bench points. UWF tallied just 9 points off the bench.

Jamie Gunter joined the pair in double figures with 10 points.

West Alabama improved to 10-14 on the season and 5-8 in the Gulf South Conference while West Florida falls to 10-15 and 6-7 in conference play.

UWA held a 45-38 advantage on the glass, including 18 offensive rebounds that led to 24 second chance points.

UWF scored the first basket of the game, but it was the only lead for the Argos in the contest as the Tigers quickly gained control of the affair. UWA pushed out to its first double digit lead of the game on a Weathers' tip in at the 5:13 mark of the opening half.

The Tigers quickly pushed out to their largest lead of the game - a 16-point edge - on a 3-pointer from Kenyatta Epps with just over a minute to play. UWA took a 32-17 lead in at the half.

The Red and White held the double figure lead until the 10-minute mark of the second half when Sher'Ryan Scott's jumper nipped the lead to 8 points. UWF cut the deficit to as few as 4 points, but the Tigers extended the lead back to double figures and never looked back.

Both squads finished the game shooting 40-percent from the field.

Scott led all scorers with 22 points for UWF. Octavia Bearden and Hanna Vette also tallied double digits in the scoring column at 13 and 10 points respectively. Bearden also claimed a team-high 11 rebounds.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Tigers travel to West Georgia to close out the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. central. ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com will carry the game with Tray Littlefield bringing you the play-by-play.
