Tigers Return to Action; Host CBU and DSU this Weekend

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After clinching a season sweep of North Alabama last week and snapping a six-game, losing streak, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team looks to remain in the win column this weekend as the Tigers host Christian Brothers and Delta State. UWA opens against CBU on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m.

West Alabama then welcomes the Lady Statesmen to Pruitt Hall on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.

The Tigers dropped outings at CBU (50-49) and DSU (64-44) earlier this season and look to avenge the outcomes this weekend as the Red and White makes a push toward the Gulf South Conference Tournament at The Arena in Niceville, Fla., March 1st-4th.

UWA is led by the reigning GSC Player of the Week, Brittany Weathers. The junior forward is averaging 13.5 points per game along with 9.1 rebounds on the campaign. Both marks stand among the top in the conference. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native has posted three, 20-plus point games this season, including a 20-point effort in the win at UNA over the weekend. Weathers posted the only double-double of the past week in the conference in a 77-57 loss at Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday with 13 points and 10 boards. The double-double is the sixth of the season and the first since December for Weathers.

Joining Weathers in double figures is Nikkia Jordan. The Decatur, Ala., product averages 11.5 points per contest – which ranks 11th in the GSC. Jordan leads UWA in scoring in conference play with 12.7 points an outing. The junior guard is eighth in the conference in field goal percentage at 41.4-percent and ninth in steals, averaging just fewer than two a game.

CBU arrives at Pruitt Hall on Thursday looking to snap a four-game, losing streak. The Lady Bucs last victory came on Jan. 19 in a 51-42 outcome against North Alabama. The Red and Black have claimed just two conference decisions on the season. A trio of Lady Bucs is hovering around the double digit mark in scoring led by Jasmine Ellis' 9.8 points per game. Jessica Green and Breanna Ridgell are scoring 8.4 and 8.1 an outing for the season.

The duo of Veronica Walker and Brooke Rhoades leads a DSU squad that enters the weekend riding a nine-game, win streak into action this weekend. Walker, a senior forward, ranks at the top of the conference in scoring and rebounds with 19 points and 9.1 boards per game, which ties the mark of Weathers. Rhoades averages 13.5 points per contest – which ties Weathers in the conference at sixth. The Lady Statesmen, whose last setback came on Jan. 5 in a 50-42 decision at Valdosta State, visits West Georgia on Thursday.

Following the weekend's slate, West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 16 as the Tigers travel to Valdosta State for a 5 p.m. start.
