Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – West Alabama claimed its second straight Gulf South Conference road win with a 2-1 victory over Union on Sunday.
"We are very pleased with a great away victory," said UWA head men's soccer coach
Matthew Thorne. "We have won the last two on the road and that's a credit to the lads."
West Alabama (9-4-1, 6-4-1 GSC) overcame a 0-0 stalemate to take its lead twice in the second half. The loss drops Union (3-8-1, 1-8-1) in its seventh straight loss of the season.
Alex Brown gave the Tigers its first lead of the match in the 53rd minute on a header off a pass from
Emmanuel Mondestin. Brown's goal gives him two on the year and marks the fifth Tiger to record multiple goals this season. Mondestin's assist was his first at UWA.
After an equalizing goal by Union's Caleb Mills in the 62nd minute, UWA's
Thibault Charmey responded with another goal one minute later. For Charmey, it is his ninth goal (15th career) and came by way of
Christian Adkins' first assist of the season.
"Alex scored a great header from a delightful chipped cross from Emmanuel who was class today," said Thorne.
"Emmanuel caused their backline all sorts of problems with his speed and skill. We were disappointed to concede a sloppy goal but we bounced right back with a very calm finish from Thibault. Another great team performance today and this will help us build momentum going into the conference tournament."
UWA starting goalkeeper
Lavares Stone (8-2-1) ended with two saves to pick up the win, while the Tiger defense allowed only three shots on-goal.
The Tigers now return home to face GSC opponent Delta State on Friday. The Statesman battled back to a 1-1 double-overtime draw the last time these two met. The match is set for 7:30 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.Â
