Lee Drops Tigers 3-1

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Lee University posted 20 team blocks while holding West Alabama to seven to oust the Tigers 3-1 in Gulf South Conference action on Friday.

"I thought it was a very good and competitive match," said UWA head volleyball coach Jordan Lay.

"We definitely put the pressure on them and they made some mistakes that helped us, we just hurt ourselves every now and then at inopportune time. We need to eliminate those errors, and take away the positives from this match. Lee is the number two team in the GSC and we just held them point for point. Tonight we demonstrated how good our team is especially for being so young."

Carly Wheling led West Alabama (9-12, 2-8) on a seven point run, down one to take set three 25-19. Lee (11-5, 7-3) edged out the Tigers in sets one (26-24), two (25-23) and four (25-23). UWA led Lee in attack percentage boasting a .123 and holding the Flames to .101.

Wheling ended with a volleyball triple-double with 10 kills, 24 assists and 12 digs. She also posted four service aces. Yahesha Johnson led the Tigers with 12 kills while Sadie Beam totaled 10 kills and 12 digs.

Lee's Paula Martins led the court with 19 kills supported by Camil Martinez who posted 40 assists. Catherine Conley hoisted four solo blocks while Paula Martins totaled six block assists.

The Tigers will return to the court to host GSC opponent Shorter on Monday. The match is set for 5:30 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.

"We need to get back to work now and prepare for Shorter," Lay said. "We are ready to protect our home floor and get a win for our fans who always come out and support us."
