LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A 14-match winning streak and individual milestones are on the line when the University of West Alabama tennis teams host Mississippi College Saturday on Senior Day at the Vaughn Tennis Complex.
Match time is set for 11 a.m., with Senior Day ceremonies beginning at 10:45. The UWA men's team is putting a 14-match win streak on the line against the Choctaws. The Tiger men are 20-2 overall and the UWA women are 17-8.
Seniors Emily Gerding and Jill Furlong will be honored prior to the match for their careers as members of the UWA women's team. Furlong, along with Anton Ivanov of the men's team, are one away for their 100th career victory, while Dasha Popova is two wins away from her 100th. Gerding has won 102 matches in her UWA career.
A singles win on Saturday would give Simon Bardell an undefeated regular season, while Kike Ruiz is one victory shy of 20 singles wins this season. Bardell is riding a 22-match win streak dating back to fall tournament play.
Should Bardell win Saturday he will be the first UWA player to go undefeated in singles play while playing in the top six and also win 20-plus matches in the same season.
“The Anonymous Seven and the Six Queen Bees of UWA Tiger Tennis are putting the cap on a great regular season against a tough Mississippi College team,” head coach Glen Fanelli said. “Seeing these seniors play at home for the last time will be tough. They will be missed greatly by the UWA Athletic Family.”
