Men's Soccer Drops First Match to GSC Leader

Box Score

ROME, Ga. – Shorter University handed the West Alabama men's soccer team its first loss of the season, 1-0, Friday in a Gulf South Conference match at Ben Brady Field.

"It was disappointing to give up a sloppy goal in the final four minutes of the match,"UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "We didn't do a good job of creating chances on offense, and the ones we did create we didn't execute properly. It's a disappointing outcome tonight, but we just have to bounce back and prepare for our next test."

Ranked 25th nationally, West Alabama (5-1-1, 3-1-1) was held scoreless for the first time in nine matches and dropped to 5-1-1, 3-1-1 in GSC play. League-leading Shorter improved to 5-1-1 and 5-0.

The match was a stalemate for 86 minutes until Shorter's Diego Gonzalez found the net on an unassisted goal.

Despite allowing a goal, starting UWA goalkeeper Lavares Stone notched six saves.

The Tigers return home to take on GSC newcomer Lee University on Sunday. The match is set for 2 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
