LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama swept the University of West Georgia 3-0 in Gulf South Conference volleyball action in Pruitt Hall Tuesday. The Tigers posted .341 attack percentage, while holding the Wolves to .057.
West Alabama improves to 9-15 overall and 7-7 in the GSC. West Georgia falls to 5-16 and 2-12. The Tigers won sets one and two 25-18 and 25-14 then hit .435 in set three to win 25-10. UWG finished the final set with -.069.
"We had a lot of momentum coming off our last win in Orlando," said UWA Head Volleyball coach
Jordan Lay.
"We had a great week of practice and the girls are showing a lot of focus on turning our season around. We had an incredible night out of the whole team. We are a complete and total team right now and this is a good jumping off point for us for the rest of the season."
Yanesha Johnson spearheaded the attack, hitting .517 with 16 kills.
Sadie Beam followed with 11 in 27 attempts. Beam is now only 12 kills away from breaking into the UWA record books as one of the program's Top 10 attack leaders. She currently owns 803 in her career.
Callie Murphy supported the attack with 31 assists. The sophomore is now the program's eighth career assist leader with 951.
"Callie's definitely found her rhythm and we're real proud of her," said Lay. "She has a lot of weapons around her and she would be the first to say that her numbers wouldn't be possible without her attackers."
On defense,
Lindsey Ball and
Sam Burgess combined for 24 digs and
Jessica Voyles tallied three block assists.
Stasha Hopkins, Tiffany Ancrum and Tiesha Alston led UWG with five kills each. The Tigers limited their attack errors to nine, while the Wolves posted 20.
West Alabama volleyball returns to the road Friday to take on GSC opponent Shorter University in Rome, Ga. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
"We need to come in to Wednesday and Thursday's practices with the same focus we had on Monday," Lay said. "This momentum is huge for us. The biggest thing for us is keeping our energy and determination alive."
