Valdosta Holds Off UWA to Win 24-17 in GSC Football

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Valdosta State held off a late West Alabama rally to defeat the Tigers, 24-17, in Gulf South Conference football action Thursday at Tiger Stadium.

Trailing for the entire second half, UWA cut the Valdosta State lead to 24-17 with 1:51 to play on a 22-yard scoring pass from Kyle Caldwell to Daryl Collins.

With three timeouts left, UWA elected to kick deep and play defense. The Tigers forced a three-and-out from the Blazers. Following the punt, UWA started on its own 30-yard line with no timeouts and drove to the VSU 37 before Donatello Brown intercepted Caldwell in the endzone as time expired.

"The defense gave us a shot to win there at the end, in fact they played well the entire game," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "They consistently gave us good field position, but we didn't do enough to sustain drives offensively."

Valdosta State won its fourth straight game, improving to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 4-5 and 1-4.

The loss was West Alabama's third straight at home, marking the first time since 2007 that the Tigers had dropped three consecutive at Tiger Stadium.

After stopping West Alabama on downs at the VSU 33 on the opening drive of the game, Valdosta State drove 53 yards on 11 plays, to taking a 3-0 lead on a 31-yard field goal by Anthony Pistelli with 6:11 left in first quarter.

On the first drive of the second quarter Caldwell connected with Chad Toocheck on an apparent 54-yard scoring pass only to have it negated by a holding penalty.

West Alabama evened the score at 3-3 with 7:42 left in the half when a 22-yard field goal by Mark Grant capped an eight-play, 62-yard drive. Caldwell and Toocheck hooked up all but two yards on the scoring drive.

Valdosta State took a 10-3 lead with 2:30 to play in the first half when Jake Medlock hit Shane Henderson on a 3-yard TD pass. The drive was kept alive by an offside penalty by UWA as the Blazers lined up for a 30-yard field goal try on a 4th-and-2.

West Alabama tied the score at 10-10 when a fumble recovery by Fred Barnes at the Valdosta State 39 set up a 30-yard touchdown pass from Caldwell to Toocheck. With 11:04 to play in the third period.

"As a defense we started fast and ended fast," Barnes said. "We have to get back to work and find out how we want this season to end. We can't change the past, but we can affect the future."

Valdosta State wasted little time recovering the lead, driving 65 yards on nine plays in just 2:45. Cedric O'Neal's 1-yard touchdown run put the Blazers back on top 17-10 with 8:19 left in the third quarter.

Duran Lowe blocked a 49-yard Mark Grant field goal try early in the fourth quarter and the Blazers effectively put the game away three plays later on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Medlock to D'Amonte Ridley.

The Tigers and the Blazers traded interceptions on the next two possessions, with Brandon Brown picking off Caldwell and Darius Knox intercepting Medlock. The pick by Knox marked the first time a Blazer quarterback had been intercepted in 117 attempts.

Toocheck finished with eight receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown, Collins with 10 catches for 115 yards as West Alabama passed for 337 yards and rang up 457 total yards to 376 for Valdosta State.

"Those individual stats don't mean anything. We didn't win," Toocheck said. "We won't quit. We just have to continue to set individual goals that lead to team goals. Nobody in this locker room wants to lose."

Caldwell was 24-for-48 for 337 yards, two TDs and two interceptions, but Tiger rushers didn't fare as well. Tyler Rogers and Markeyus Johnson led the UWA ground attack with just 27 yards each.

Medlock finished 19-for-25 for 226 yards and two TDs. He was also the Blazers leading rusher with 55 yards on 15 carries. Chris Anderson had six catches for 64 yards for VSU.

Kenny Murphy led all tacklers, racking up 10 for the Blazers. Brandon Keel and Quinton Harton had seven tackles each to lead the UWA defense.

West Alabama travels to Mississippi College on Nov. 8 and then ends it season on Nov. 13 by hosting North Alabama.
