"Its Senior Night and the lads wanted it for our seniors," said UWA Head Men's Soccer Coach
Matthew Thorne.
"Every ball, the players were worked so hard. Everyone helped tonight. There was passion from the boys that might not have played any minutes. It was absolutely great just seeing delight on everyone's face. There's nothing better than giving the seniors a present going down to Pensacola a second seed. UAH is a quality team, they've been nationally ranked. They played great football out there."
Two of the six seniors put the Tigers on the board first.
Emmanuel Mondestin struck early with a goal in the first 36 seconds of play to put UWA up 1-0 going into halftime.
Thibault Charmey opened the second half with another goal in the 52
nd minute. Fellow senior
Vitor Gazza assisted on both scores.
The Chargers answered back with their first goal in the 66
th minute from Andrew Ingram, but UWA's
Brian Meadows delivered what proved the game winning-goal seven minutes later unassisted. Rafn Haraldsson added UAH's second goal in the 86
th minute.
Charmey's goal lifted him to a single season high of 12 goals and improves him as the program's leading scorer with 28. Gazza became the team's leader with seven assists this season.
Senior goalkeeper
Lavares Stone recorded three saves to improve to 8-3. Michael Winstone falls to 10-4 for the Chargers.
West Alabama Men's Soccer will return to action in the Semifinal round of the GSC Tournament on Friday, November 7
th. The Tigers will face the winner of UAH and Delta State on November 3
rd.
"We'll only be happy if we lift the title which is still a bit away but we can achieve it," Thorne said.
"We can go in and compete with anyone in this conference. Going in, we've got an experienced group here. They know what it's all about. They made it to the semi-finals the first year, the championship game the second year and we want to go one step further and win it this year."
The Semifinal round is slated for 4:30 p.m. at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla.
