LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team posted its third highest attack percentage of the season hitting .247 to take a 3-0 Gulf South Conference victory over Mississippi College in Pruitt Hall Tuesday.
West Alabama snaps a three match losing dip to improve to 6-10 overall and 5-6 in the GSC. Mississippi College falls to 4-13 and 0-10.
"It's definitely good to get a three set victory on our home court; something we haven't done in a few matches," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay.
"Tonight was a good boost of confidence for the girls before moving into the second half of conference play. We stressed the importance to starting this half of the season right and making improvements and tonight we accomplished that."
The Choctaws claimed early leads in the first two sets, leading by as many as seven points in the first set. The Tigers rallied back to win the first 25-18 and the second 25-21. UWA commanded the third set, never trailing to secure the win with a 25-13 set victory.
Yanesha Johnson posted a double-double with her best three set performance of 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore
Callie Murphy also set her season best through three sets with 19 assists. Murphy is currently the program's ninth career assist leader with 723 through 40 matches.
Elizabeth Culhane hit .412 with 8 kills, while matching
Briana Sandifer with three block assists.
Mississippi College finished with .086 attack percentage, led by Krista Zieschang with 11 kills, hitting .435.
West Alabama volleyball will host Union University Friday as the Tiger's Senior Night at 7 p.m. in Pruitt Hall, with a quick turnaround as Christian Brothers comes to town Saturday at 10 a.m. Â
"This weekend is a very busy weekend for us, however we are excited to keep playing on our home court," Lay said. "We have a couple of details we need to touch up on, but we're going to continue to push each other to be competitive in practice."
