UWA Opens With 66-54 Exhibition Win Over Division I UNO

NEW ORLEANS, La.  – West Alabama had three players in double figures and put together a solid second-half rally in head coach Rusty Cram's debut on the way to a 66-54 women's college basketball exhibition win Friday at the Human Performance Center.

"I could tell we were a little nervous early," Cram said. "We have to learn to win and we took a step toward that tonight. There were several areas where we grew up in this game."

The Tigers will open regular season play Monday at Miles College. The game counted as the regular season opener for the Division I Privateers, who lost for the 34th consecutive time.

New Orleans led 26-22 at the half, but UWA put together a 10-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 32-28 lead with 14:32 to play and never really looked back.

Kelcia Bufkin drained three-pointers on three consecutive trips down the floor midway through the second half on her way to leading West Alabama scorers with 17 points. Britney McCloud chipped in 15 points, while Jada Williams added 11 points on a 9-for-12 shooting night from the free throw line.

UWA outrebounded UNO 38-27 with McCloud and Jasmine Hampton collecting nine boards each.

"Shelia Washington did a great job of running the offense and Kelcia was great in the second half," Cram said. "McCloud is always going to be there offensively, while Moejha Calmes and Jasmine Hampton gave us great minutes."

Hallie Matthews scored 11 points to lead New Orleans, followed by Octavia Wilson with 10. Matthews grabbed nine rebounds for the Privateers, who made just 9-of-27 free throw attempts.
