Miles Spoils UWA Regular season Opener, 71-56

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Miles College had four players score in double figures on the way to a 71-56 women's college basketball victory over West Alabama in the regular season opener for both teams at Knox Gym.

"We were never in it. We had a lack of discipline ," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We were a different team than what we saw in the exhibition at New Orleans the other night, but we are not going back again to what this team was tonight at Miles."

The Lady Bears shot 43 percent (20-46) from the floor and 75 percent (29-39) from the line while limiting the Tigers to just 32 percent (21-64) from the field. UWA managed just 61 percent (13-21) from the free throw line while and made just one of 17 three point attempts.

Javonne Brown had 19 points to lead Miles (1-0), followed by Wendy Miller with 14, Porshia Blue with 13 and Ashley Steger with 10. Blue collected 10 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the season, while Miller grabbed nine boards.

Britney McCloud was the only West Alabama (0-1) player in double figures with 15 points. Sheila Washington and Jasmine Hampton led Tiger rebounders with six each. Shameika Hart had five of UWA's 19 steals.

West Alabama remains on the road with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff at Stillman College on Wednesday. Miles plays Elizabeth City in the Clark Atlanta Tournament on Saturday.
