Last Second Goal Drops UWA to Fourth

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Caroline Moore scored with 17 seconds left to give Valdosta State a 2-1 victory over West Alabama in Gulf South Conference women's soccer action in Tiger Stadium Sunday. The win gives VSU a bye through the first round of the GSC tournament and drops UWA as the fourth seed to host the first round on Tuesday.

Valdosta State improves 9-5-2 overall and 9-1-1 in the GSC. West Alabama ends the regular season with its best record in program history of 13-4-1 and 8-3-1. The Tigers will move into the post season to host fifth seed Christian Brothers in Tiger Stadium on Tuesday.

"This time of year we just want to play games," said UWA Head Women's Soccer Coach Graeme Orr. "There are a lot of teams sitting at home right now whose season is over. We just have to keep winning to play now. We will be ready and we will be a tough team to beat."

The Blazers opened the match with Shelby Jennings first goal of the season putting VSU up 1-0 at the half. West Alabama responded in the second with Lydia Sutcliffe connecting to Kiersten Reilly to equalize the game at 1-1. For Reilly, it was her third goal of the season.

UWA shot 11-for-13 on-goal, while Valdosta State posted eight shots on-goal in 11 attempts. Olivia Mills improved to 9-6-1 in the net for the Blazers, recording six saves. UWA goalkeeper Issy Foster completed five saves, but fell to 11-4-1.

"I thought we were exceptional in the second half, but give Valdosta State credit in the first 25 minutes; they started very strong," Orr said.

"We really gave everything and left everything on the field today. We have girls with unbelievable character who fight for each and every ball and I can't ask for more than that. The good thing is, it's not the championship yet. We've been consistent enough all year to make a push into the championship, but we just have to move on from here."
