UWA Advances to GSC Women’s Soccer Semi-Finals With Win Over CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Sparked by a raucous playoff crowd and goals by Nina Coleman and Tori Brook, the University of West Alabama women's soccer team defeated Christian Brothers, 2-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Gulf South Conference Soccer Championships Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.

UWA improves to 14-4-1 with the win and will play North Alabama in the semi-final round of the tournament Friday at 11 a.m. in Pensacola, Fla. CBU ends its season at 13-5.

"This was a great team performance," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "It's not about how many goals you score or passes you make. It's about wanting to win.

"We couldn't have done this without a great crowd behind us tonight," Orr said. "We asked everyone to come out an be the 12th woman and they answered the bell for us."

After a scoreless first half, Coleman scored the only goal UWA would need on a header off a corner kick from Katy Morris to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0, at the 58:35 mark. The goal was Coleman's fourth this season. Brook added UWA's second goal, her first of the season, at 86:23 to seal the deal.

"To bounce back from a loss with 17 seconds left on Sunday shows what kind of character this team has," Orr said. "We came out and worked extremely hard from the first whistle."

West Alabama outshot Christian Brothers 9-2 and did not allow a Lady Bucs shot in the final 45 minutes.

UWA goalkeeper Issy Foster improved her record to 12-4, while CBU keeper Robyn Wade dipped to 11-5.
