UWA Bench Comes Up Strong in Win over Montevallo

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama's bench outscored Montevallo by 29 points as the Tigers defeated the Lady Falcons, 62-47, in women's college basketball Tuesday at Pruitt Hall, handing Rusty Cram his first home win as UWA's head coach.

Riding a modest two-game winning streak, the Tigers improved to 2-1. Montevallo dipped to 0-5.

Montevallo jumped out to a 12-2 before Cram summoned the reserves and the game slowly began to change. West Alabama rallied to lead 29-22 by halftime despite shooting just 30 percent for the floor in the first 20 minutes.

"They came out smoking, but the big thing is we didn't lose our poise," Cram said. "We cleared the bench and slowly began getting back into the game. Anytime your bench outscores your opponent 30-1 that's a good night."

West Alabama turned the shooting tables in the second half, converting 47 percent while limiting the Lady Falcons to just 8-of-29 (27 percent) from the floor. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 46-32.

Britney McCloud scored 18 points for UWA to lead all scorers. Kelcia Bufkin contributed 13 and Malaka Johnson hit 3-of-4 three pointers to finish up with nine points. Sheila Washington led all rebounders with 10.

"Britney McCloud is worth the price of admission," Cram said. "Teams are starting to double her now, but that will open it up for other players."

Jacquelyn Thompson scored 16 points to lead Montevallo, followed by Carrington Caise with 14.

West Alabama returns to action by hosting Miles College at 6 p.m. on Monday. Montevallo is host to Stillman on Dec. 6.
