Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UWA Women Win Third Straight, 60-43, Over Miles

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama led from tap to final horn, avenging its only loss of the young women's college basketball season by defeating Miles College, 60-43, Monday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win was the third straight for West Alabama and improved the Tigers to 3-1. Miles dropped to 1-3. Miles had beaten UWA, 71-56, to open the season Nov. 19 in Birmingham.

"We saw about 38 minutes of zone defense tonight," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We handled the zone well in the first half and our kids are playing hard.

"I am proud of our players. We are learning to get people in key positions to score," Cram said. "To be 3-1 heading into conference play is a good position to be in."

Britney McCloud scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead West Alabama, who shot 45 percent from the field (22-48).  McCloud also dished out six assists and had three steals. Jasmine Hampton chipped in 11 points for the Tigers.

"Britney McCloud and Jasmine Hampton played very well tonight," Cram said. "McCloud is a great player offensively."

A stingy Tiger defense limited Miles to just 24 percent shooting (15-61) from the floor. West Alabama outrebounded the Golden Bears 51-34.

After jumping out to a 31-23 lead at the half, West Alabama stretched the lead to 19 points before settling for the final margin.

Ashley Steger scored 12 points to lead Miles College scoring. Porshia Blue added 11 points and had seven rebounds.

West Alabama opens Gulf South Conference play Thursday at Mississippi College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live in the Twin States on ESPN 104.9 and globally on www.espn1049.com with Lee Tracey on the call.
