BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – West Alabama Men's Soccer senior
Thibault Charmey was named the 2014 Gulf South Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive year Monday. Charmey along with junior
Alex Brown were also listed as First Team All-GSC, while junior
Brian Meadows earned second team honors.
Charmey, a native of Paris, France, was the first UWA men's soccer player to earn Player of the Year honors in the programs second year a season ago. The award adds to a lengthy list of credentials already earned by the midfielder this season. A 2014 Preseason All-GSC honoree and GSC Player of the week, Charmey has been named to the All-GSC First Team twice, preseason team twice and received the weekly honor a total of five times in his career.
Charmey closed the regular season as the GSC's leading scorer with his season high of12 goals, ranked 20
th in the NCAA. He is 18
th in the nation with 1.86 goals per game. Entering the post season, he is the program's leading scorer with 28 career goals and leads with15 career assists; five this season. A master of set pieces, he tallied UWA's first hat-trick against Mississippi College on Sept. 28, by scoring on a corner kick, free kick and penalty kick.
Brown earned first team honors for the first time while previously being named to the second team in 2012 and 2013. The Essex, England native is a dual threat for the Tigers, leading a defense that limited opponents to 21 goals, while UWA totaled 40. Brown joined in on the scoring himself, contributing three goals, including the game-winner against Union. No stranger to finding the net from the back line, he holds eight goals through three seasons.
Meadows, a Moody, Ala. native, earned a place on the post season team for the first time in his career as a Tiger. The midfielder has contributed intangible assets to the UWA attack, while still adding three goals and three assists this season. The sharp-shooter owns the team's second highest shot on-goal percentage (minimum of five shots on-goal) with .583; 14-for-24.
The Tigers ended the regular season 10-6 overall, facing five Top 25 teams and finishing second the league at 6-3 in conference action. They earned a bye through the first round of the GSC Tournament with 3-2 win over in-state rival Alabama Huntsville on Friday.
West Alabama Men's Soccer returns to action Friday, November 7
th at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla. in the Semifinal round to face the winner of No. 3 UAH versus No. 6 Delta State on Tuesday, November 4
th in Huntsville, Ala. The time for the Semifinal round is yet to be determined.
