Tigers Fall in GSC Semifinal; Region Hopes Still Alive

PENSACOLA, Fla. – North Alabama's Stacey Webber scored off of a loose ball in the box in the 71st minute to eliminate West Alabama Women's Soccer from the Gulf South Conference Tournament in the semifinal round Friday.

North Alabama, the top seed in the tournament, improves to 14-2-1 overall, while West Alabama, the fourth seed, drops to 14-5-1.

Webber came off the bench to tally her first goal of the season, unassisted. She finished with two of the Lions four shots on-goal. UNA totaled 12 shots. UWA posted 5-for-15 on-goal shots, led by Nicki Gears with two.

Lions goalkeeper Rachel Beninati picked up the win to improve to 8-1. She totaled five saves, including a stop on Lauren Tate's penalty kick attempt in the 28th minute. Issy Foster dips to 12-5-1 for the Tigers.

"Just like Tuesday night's match, today we continued to dominate major aspects of the game," said UWA Head Women's Soccer Coach Graeme Orr.

"After the goal, I felt that our reaction was very good. We kept up the intensity and out-shot them. We've played consistent enough this year to deserve a bid to the regionals, we just have to wait and see now. It would be an injustice to soccer for us not to go to regionals. We've proven today that, even though we are a four year old program, the ones who have been here four years have progressed tremendously."

Post season hopes still remain for West Alabama, who entered the week ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II South Region Poll, defeated the region's fifth ranked team, Christian Brothers 2-0 on Tuesday in the first round of the GSC Tournament. The Tigers need to maintain at least the sixth seed in the region for a chance at a bid to the six-team NCAA South Region playoff and a fourth seed to guarantee a spot.

The GSC and Sunshine State Conference champions receive automatic berths into the playoff. The remaining four seeds will be filled according to the rankings, with the two top-ranked teams hosting superregionals Nov. 13-16. North Alabama entered the week ranked third and will play the winner of West Florida (seventh) and Valdosta State (10th) on Sunday in the Championship match.

The final regional selections will be made Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at NCAA.com. Follow UWAathletics.com on Facebook (UWAathletics) and Twitter (@UWAathletics) for updates to West Alabama Women's Soccer.
