PENSACOLA, Fla. – Two-time Gulf South Conference Player of the Year
Thibault Charmey scored two goals and an assist to lead West Alabama Men's Soccer to 3-1 victory over Shorter and the Tiger's first Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship Title.
Charmey was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, while
Vitor Gazza,
Traye Torrance and
Emmanuel Mondestin earn All-Tournament honors.
West Alabama, in its third season, finishes on a four game unbeaten streak and 12-6 overall; 6-3 in the GSC. The tournament's runner-up team, Shorter made its first appearance in the conference tournament as the fourth seed. They end their season 8-10-1 and 5-4.
"This is an amazing achievement. Three years ago we didn't even have a men's program," said UWA Head Coach
Matthew Thorne.
"We went out and we showed great character. We dug down deep after some adversity in the second half and just continued a quality team performance. I am so proud of these guys and the sendoff we were able to give to our seniors. We now have a great base to build off of for many years to come."
Charmey struck first in the 14
th minute on assists by
Evan Beutler and
Vitor Gazza. He put the Tigers up 2-0 at the half with another goal in the 44
th minute; unassisted. Four minutes into the second half Beutler extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal set up by Charmey and Meadows.
A senior from Paris, France, Charmey ends his storied career as the program's leading scorer with 30 career goals and a season high of 14 this year. For fellow senior Beutler, he ends the season with five goals and 13 career.
West Alabama finished with seven shots on goal, while the defense held Shorter to three. The Tiger's freshman goalkeeper,
Brad Louis made two saves to improve to 3-3-1.
Shorter's lone goal came in the 74
th minute from Irvin Expinal. The Hawk's keeper Nicolas Ferrigno tallied four saves, but allowed three goals to take the loss. Â Â
"We are losing a lot of quality players, but we have many great young players coming up," Thorne said. "It's exciting times here at UWA, but now we have a target on our back. We will just push on to continue to do great things."
