LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team fell to Shorter University in three sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) in the Tigers home opener at Pruitt Hall Friday.
Shorter extends its win streak to four matches and improves to 6-2 overall; 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama drops to 3-6 and 3-2.
"Shorter is a very good ball team. Â They are definitely at the top of the conference right now," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay.
"The thing for us is just improving on the execution. We came out with the right game plan, we just have to be able to execute from the get-go. Not taking anything away from Shorter, they played a good game and really challenged us, but we have to take the opportunity to make teams pay for when they make mistakes as well. I felt that we just really didn't do that tonight."
Shorter limited its attacking errors to 17 in 106 attempts, while UWA committed 24 in 99 attempts. Both teams battled up front totaling five team blocks each.
Erica Baker and Anna Graham led the Hawks with eight kills each, while Cheyenne Frady supported the attack with 15 assists. On defense, Cheyenne McLemore and Elizabeth Dowd combined for 23 digs.
Yanesha Johnson led the Tiger attack for the fifth consecutive match. She totaled eight kills accounting for a quarter of UWA's points.
Callie Murphy set up 12 of 28 kills and
Sadie Beam and
Lindsey Ball combined for 17 digs. Â Â Â Â
West Alabama remains at home with a short turn around as it faces GSC opponent Lee University on Saturday. Tipoff is set for Noon in Pruitt Hall.Â
