BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of West Alabama forward
Nicki Gears is the Gulf South Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the period ending on Sept. 22, as announced by the GSC office Tuesday.
Former 2013 GSC Co-Player of the Year, Gears led the Tigers to their 2014 home opening victory over Auburn University Montgomery and conference opening win against the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The wins extended UWA's win streak to four. The Ripon, England native finished the week with two goals. It is her fourth time to be honored as the conference's Player of the Week.
Her first goal of the week put the Tigers on the board in the 34
th minute against AUM. She ended the match 10-for-13 shots on-goal. The second goal came with 20 seconds left to play against the Chargers on Sunday and solidified a 2-0 win.
Gears is the conference's third leading scorer with four goals in five matches this season. The senior owns 42 goals in her career, making her the nation's fifth active career leading scorer.
West Alabama returns to action to take on Georgia Southwestern Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Americus, Ga. The Tigers then return home to face Delta State in Tiger Stadium Friday at 5 p.m.
