ROME, Ga. – Eight and half minutes into overtime,
Kirsten Reilly netted her fifth game-winning goal of the season and fourth in five matches to lead West Alabama to 3-2 victory over Shorter University in Gulf South Conference women's soccer action Sunday.
It was the four match to go into extra minutes for the Tigers, marking six overtime periods this season. UWA improves to 8-3 overall and sits atop the GSC standings at 6-1 tied for first with Lee University. Shorter drops to 5-7 and 2-5.
Reilly now becomes the team's leading scorer with seven total goals this year. She is one goal ahead of
Katy Morris who gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at halftime with her sixth season goal in the 24
th minute.
Ten minutes into the second half,
Natalie Mooney put UWA up by two goals, scoring on an assist from Reilly. Shorter's Corrie Thomas scored back-to-back goals in the 56
th and 87
th minutes to send the match into overtime. Both goals were assisted by Amber Miller.
UWA goalkeeper
Issy Foster (8-3) made four saves to get the win, while the Hawk's Alden Powell (3-5) took the loss with five saves.
"We faced adversity again today and showed what characters we have in this team," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr. "In a difficult environment we battled and scored outstanding goals. Katy, Natalie and Kirsten's strikes were different class. I am very proud and now it's my job to get focused for next week at home."
West Alabama women's soccer returns home on Friday to host GSC opponent Spring Hill College. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
