Kirsten Reilly’s Header Lifts UWA to 2-1 Double OT Win Over Union

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Kirsten Reilly's header off a cross by Katie Morris found an opening in the bottom left of the Union goal in the 105th minute to lift West Alabama to a 2-1 double overtime Gulf South Conference women's soccer match Friday at Tiger Stadium.

"Union was marking Kirsten with three and four players for most of the night," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "I was glad she got the game winner because she was the highlight of the match."

The victory was the Tigers first in three overtime matches this season and improved West Alabama to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the GSC. Union dropped to 2-7 and 2-1.

"We found a way to win," Orr said. "Our heart and desire was never in question, but in overtime it's about technique and tactics.

"We can play better and we will play better," Orr said. "The important thing is that's three points in the conference. That's big."

Chelsea Commings put West Alabama ahead with her first goal of the season in the 41st minute before a long distance goal by Union's Honeye Heydari in 48th minute tied the match at 1-1. The goal was Heydari's second of the year.

After ending regulation knotted at one goal apiece, neither team scored in the first overtime before Reilly put the match away early on the second extra period.

West Alabama closes a brief two-game home stand with another conference match against Christian Brothers Sunday at 1 p.m. Union remains on the road at Alabama Huntsville on Sunday.
