LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference's leading scorer Chloe Richards netted two goals to lead North Alabama to 2-1 victory over nationally ranked No. 21 West Alabama in GSC women's soccer action at Tiger Stadium on Sunday.
The win lifts North Alabama (12-2-1; 8-2 in the GSC) into a tie with West Alabama (10-4; 8-2) for second place in the league standings. It was the first home loss of the season for the Tigers, snapping a seven match win streak.
"I was very proud of how we fought all the way until the end," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr.
"We created better chances in the second half. With it being 'Senior Day' it's sometimes hard to deal with those emotions and I think we came out a little flat, but credit the ladies in how they stepped up and worked all the way until the end. We just want to push on and finish the regular season strong and see where we end up."
Richards netted her first goal of the match in the 37
th minute on a shot taken 25 yards out that put the Lions up 1-0 in the first half. Her second goal in the 80
th minute put UNA up 2-0 and gave her 26 total goals this season.
With three minutes left to play,
Nina Coleman put UWA on the board with her first goal of the season. Coleman becomes the 10
th Tiger to score a goal in 15 matches.
Despite losing the shooting margin 8-3 in the first half, the West Alabama attack rallied back to lead the match in shots 13-12.
Shelby Thorton (12-0-1) remained unbeaten in the net for UNA, completing four saves.
Issy Foster (10-4) made five saves, but snapped a three game win streak in the net for UWA.
West Alabama women's soccer will play host to West Georgia in its final home regular season match on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
