LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Georgia's Cari Powell broke through the West Alabama defense and netted the game-winning goal unassisted in the 96
th minute to lift the Wolves to a 1-0 overtime victory at Tiger Stadium on Wednesday.
West Georgia improves to 8-6-1 overall and remains sixth in the GSC at 7-3-1. West Alabama drops to 10-5 and 8-3, tied with West Florida for third place.
"We tried very hard, as we always do, and forced the issue," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr.
"Unfortunately we just didn't show enough quality to seal the game in 90 minutes. This will be a valuable lesson for us because it is playoff time coming up now. It's win or go home. If we would have won our last two games, we would have been in a nice position, but sometimes it's good to learn from defeats."
UWA led the shot margin 12-8, opening with six shots in the first half and limiting the Wolves to two. UWG matched the Tigers five shots in the second half, and scored on its only shot in overtime.
For Powell, it was her third goal of the season; first game-winner. She finished 1-for-1 shots on-goal. Half of UWA's total shot count were on-frame, with six different Tigers tallying shots on-goal.
Kirsten Reilly led with three shots, while
Rianna Gurvitz and
Natalie Mooney each finished 1-for-2.
Katie Miklausich (7-4-1) totaled six saves to pick up the win in the net for West Georgia.
Issy Foster (10-5) completed four saves, but took the loss.
West Alabama women's soccer will close out the regular season on the road when they take on Valdosta State on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (C.S.T.) in Valdosta, Ga.
