Wolves Jump Out Quickly to Defeat West Alabama 32-14

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Second-ranked West Georgia put up 32 points in the first half and then made them stand up as both teams opened Gulf South Conference play with the Wolves defeating West Alabama, 32-14, Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

West Georgia improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in GSC play. The loss was the first of the season for West Alabama, dropping the Tigers to 4-1 and 0-1.

"They made virtually every play in the first half and that's what good football teams do," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "They are a very good football team and when you make mistakes good teams will make you pay.

"The good thing is we didn't give up," Gilliland said. "We had every chance to fold and start pointing fingers and we didn't. We continued to compete."

West Georgia scored on a 7-yard run by LaMarcus Franks and Hunter Heck kicked a 20-yard field goal to give the Wolves an 11-0 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter D.J. Ezell scooped and scored on 22-yard fumble return, Telvin Brown navigated his way to an 80-yard punt return before hauling in a 32-yard pass from Dallas Dickey while lying on his back in the Tiger endzone.

The halftime numbers were less than desirable for West Alabama, with the Tigers gaining just 34 yards on 32 plays from scrimmage. West Georgia had 211 total yards and a 32-0 lead after two quarters.

"If it could happen in the first half, it did," Gilliland said. "We had the same shortcomings that showed up offensively in the first four games but we were able to get by. Maybe today will get our attention. We have a ton to work on."

Neither team scored in the third quarter as the Wolves outgained the Tigers 100 yards to 24.

With injuries to Trent Thompson and Dezmon Huntley, West Alabama turned to redshirt freshman Harry Satterwhite to close out the game.

From McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Satterwhite entered the game during UWA's second drive of the fourth quarter and finished the game 11-for-24 with two touchdown passes and sparked a Tiger offense that put up 161 total yards in the final quarter.

Satterwhite connected with Nicarius Peterson on a 10-yard scoring pass with 7:34 to play and then hooked up with Ty Morgan on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 38 seconds left.

"I haven't played in the heat of a game in a long time, so that felt good," Satterwhite said. "I was just trying to do what I have been taught to do and get the ball to guys in in space. Nico and Ty both made great plays on the ball on the TD passes."

West Georgia finished with 341 yards of total offense, 120 less than the Wolves had averaged through the first four games of the season. West Alabama ended up with 219 total yards, with 158 of those coming through the air.

Javae Swindle gained 29 yards on six carries to led West Alabama rushers. The senior from Jemison, Alabama needs just 56 yards to become the leading rusher in UWA history. Daryl Collins led Tiger receivers with six receptions for 46 yards.

Aares McCall carried 12 times for 40 yards to lead the Wolves. Dickey was 17-of-26 for 211 yards. Shaq Hall had five receptions for 38 yards for West Georgia.

Brandon Keel recorded 11 tackles, including a sack and one for loss, to lead West Alabama defenders. Quentin Harton had 10 tackles, including two for loss. Chris Davis broke up three passes.

"We came out after the half and made some plays. We started communicating better," Keel said. "We knew they would play fast and that there would be some trick plays. Our coaches had us ready to play."

Gabe Freeman had eight tackles to lead the Wolves. Kentrell Reynolds intercepted a pass and Ezell had the fumble recovery for UWG.

West Alabama travels to Florida Tech next week, while West Georgia is host to Valdosta State.
