CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Lee University defeated West Alabama 3-1 in Gulf South Conference action Friday, issuing the Tigers their first conference loss of the year.
The win lifts Lee, who is now 6-3-2 overall, into first place in the GSC standings tied with UWA and North Alabama at 5-1. The Tigers drop to 7-3 overall.
"I am proud of the second half reaction by our team today," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr. "I thought we rattled them for large parts in that period. In the first half we started well but went flat. I am pleased about the reaction that will help us building for the future."
The Flames took a 2-0 lead at halftime with goals by Nicole Blanchard in the 19
th minute and Summer Lanter in the 23
rd.
Eleven minutes into the second half,
Kirsten Reilly put West Alabama on the board with her fourth goal in as many matches; sixth of the season. Her goal came unassisted on a direct kick from 25 yards out.
Lauren Peters added the final goal for Lee in the 80
th minute. For Peters and Blanchard it was their first goals of the season; Lanter's fifth.
The Flames out-shot the Tigers 15-6, with goalkeeper Haley Gribler (5-3-2) making two saves to pick up the win. UWA goalie
Issy Foster (7-3) made three saves but allowed the second most goals in a single match this season to pick up the loss.
West Alabama women's soccer will remain on the road to take on Shorter University on Sunday. The match is scheduled for Noon (C.S.T.). in Rome, Ga.
