Wingo and UNA Too Much for Tigers

FLORENCE – Luke Wingo passed for 450 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score to lead North Alabama to a 52-14 Gulf South Conference football victory over West Alabama Saturday at Braly Stadium.

With the victory North Alabama improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the GSC, claiming at least a share of a third consecutive conference title. West Alabama ends its season 7-4 and 3-4.

With the exception of a quick spurt early in the third quarter, North Alabama dominated the game. The Lions rolled up 592 yards of total offense while limiting the Tigers to just 250. West Alabama did not complete a pass or get a first down until the 9:23 mark of the second quarter.

"We got beat by a very good football team," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "We thought we may have found something we could work with offensively early in the second half, but two turnovers in the endzone killed any momentum we tried to muster."

UNA got on the board first on 28-yard field goal by Kevin Henke at the 9:33 mark of the first quarter, capping a 14-play, 73-yard drive. Darius Jones then picked off Harry Satterwhite's first pass on a tipped ball to put Lions in business at midfield, but the drive stalled at the UWA 33 and Henke missed a 50-yard field goal try.

After a three-and-out by the UWA offense, North Alabama went 62 yards on just four plays, capped off by a 15-yard touchdown pass from Wingo to Dre Hall to make it 10-0 Lions with 4:25 left in the first quarter. Hall would finish with six receptions for 153 yards and three touchdowns.

"Luke Wingo is a leader, a tough competitor, a heck-of-a general," Gilliland said. "He is just a ball player who comes from a family of ball players. He doesn't do anything flashy. He just wins games."

Wingo and Julius Johnson connected on a 6-yard scoring pass early in the second quarter to put UNA up 17-0, but the West Alabama offense found its sea legs on the ensuing drive, going 69 yards on eight plays. Satterwhite capped that drive by completing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Daryl Collins with 7:24 left in the half.

North Alabama answered three plays later when Wingo and Hall hooked up again, this time for 77 yards and a touchdown to make the score 24-7 Lions with 6:20 left in the first half. Wingo and Hall completed the trifecta with an 11-yard scoring pass with 57.3 second left in the half to make it 31-7 UNA at the intermission.

While Hall had a huge day for the Lions, he was not the leading receiver. Jarret Smith caught nine passes for 115 yards. Lee Mayhall had six more receptions for 51 yards. Lamonte Thompson was UNA's leading rusher with 76 yards on 17 carries.

The Lions limited West Alabama to just 88 first-half yards while piling up 349 of their own, 324 of those through the air. West Alabama had 33 yards rushing and 55 passing at the midway point.

UWA's offense came out firing in the second half, going 61 yards in just four plays. Tyler Rogers' 23-yard run cut UNA's lead to 31-14 less than two minutes into the second half and two plays later Duke Leland intercepted Wingo at the Lions 15 yard line.

North Alabama quickly returned the favor when Floyd Jones intercepted Satterwhite in the end zone to snuff out the threat. Wingo then made the Tigers pay, connecting with Smith on a 67-yard touchdown pass three plays later to increase the UNA lead to 38-14 with 10:16 left in the third period.

Wingo called his own number from the 2 yard line with 11:27 left to play to improve the North Alabama lead to 45-14. Backup quarterback Jacob Tucker finished off UNA scoring with a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

"What happened today shouldn't diminish what we have accomplished this season and what this senior class has done," Gilliland said. "We had some bright spots today. The offensive line blocked well in the second half and Tyler (Rogers) and Rashaad (Lee) ran the ball well. Quinten Harton was all over the field on defense."

A senior from Tuscaloosa, Harton recorded a career-high 16 tackles in his final game game as Tiger linebacker. Brandon Keel followed with nine stops. Leland had eight tackles to go with his interception. C.J. Jackson had nine tackles for UNA.

Lee finished with 61 yards on 17 carries. Rogers had 56 yards on 10 trips. Tre Trimble was the Tigers' leading receiver with three catches for nine yards.

Satterwhite completed 9-of-15 for 100 yards and was intercepted three times. Trent Thompson was 3-of-11 for 12 yards in backup duty.
