Tigers Fall to Stillman in Road Game Debut

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Rodnerius Lewis posted 30 points to lead Stillman College to 80-63 victory over West Alabama men's basketball in its travel debut at Birthright Hall on Tuesday.

Stillman never relinquished its lead throughout the entire game to improve to 3-0 overall. West Alabama slips to 1-2.

"We got beat in almost every aspect of the game tonight," said UWA head coach Allen Sharpe. "Beginning from the tipoff, I don't think we were ever really mentally ready. We fought back at the end of the first half, but we fell back into the same trap in the second half. But tonight was good for us. We found some things out as far as who our competitors are."

UWA trailed by 14 points 12 minutes into the first half, but cut the deficit to two in the final three minutes. Stillman led 35-32 at the break, shooting 40 percent from the field and holding West Alabama to 24 percent. UWA led the turnover margin 12-5 in the first period.

Jahmal Lane came off the bench to post 12 points in the first half for the UWA Tigers, shooting 8-of-13 at the free throw line. Deontaye Ewing was 6-for-6 at the line with 10 points.

Halfway into the second half, Stillman rebuilt its lead to 22 points – it's largest of the night. West Alabama would only be able to cut the deficit as close as 12 points in the final eight minutes. Both teams improved its field goal percentage in the second period with Stillman shooting 54 percent and UWA tallying 36 percent.

Rodnerius Lewis totaled 10-of-17 from the field (3-of-6 from the 3-point line) and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Stillman totaled 44 points in the paint and limited UWA to 22.

West Alabama led 42-29 points off the bench with Jahmal Lane finishing with 22. Cannon Edwards and Jake Jobling also came off the bench to combine for 16 more points. Edwards shot 3-of-4 from the 3-point line. Deontaye Ewing ended with 15 total points. Tyler Chaisson led the court with 10 total rebounds.

West Alabama men's basketball will return home on Thursday to host Lemoyne-Owen College. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.

"Thank goodness we play Thursday," Sharpe said. "Thankfully we won't have long to dwell on tonight and we can get it all figured out."
