UNA Sneaks By Tigers in Overtime, 91-89

FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama erased a 10-point second-half West Alabama lead on the way to a 91-89 Gulf South Conference overtime victory over the Tigers Sunday at Flowers Hall. North Alabama improved to 5-5 with the win, 2-2 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 4-5 and 1-3 after a game where the lead changed hands 17 times and the score was tied 11 times. The Tigers not only wasted a double digit lead, but also a 54 percent shooting night (29-for-53) and season-best scoring performances from Simeon Dennis and Acie Vance. Dennis led all scorers with 25 before fouling out with 18.8 seconds left in regulation. Vance finished with 21 and made 7-of-9 field goal attempts. "For whatever reason we couldn't get it done defensively in the second half," Tiger head coach Allen Sharpe said. "They got 46 points in the second half. I'm disappointed we couldn't get enough stops to win. If you score 89 points that ought to be enough." West Alabama led by as many as four points down the stretch in regulation, but a baseline jumper by Jeff Hodge with 8.2 seconds left cut the Tiger lead to 79-78 and then Hodge coaxed in a layup with 1.9 seconds to play to force the overtime. UWA led in overtime until Hodge hit a pair of free throws with 2:10 to play. Deontaye Ewing answered with a runner to tie the game at 86-86 with 1:45 left, but a layup by John Fletcher and a jumper by Austin Timms over the next minute put UNA ahead 90-86 with 12.8 seconds left. Vance hit a three-pointer with 5.3 seconds left in the extra period to cut the Lion lead to 90-89, but Fletcher hit the front end of two free throws with 3.3 seconds left for the final margin. "I thought we were on to something after getting a win on the road at UAH and after the first half today," Sharpe said. "We just didn't get it done." Bilal Richardson had 22 points and 17 rebounds to lead North Alabama. Timms added 18 points, while Hodge and Dimarrio Jackson chipped in 14 and Fletcher 11. Ewing followed Dennis and Vance with 17 points for West Alabama. Dennis collected seven rebounds. West Alabama is host to Union at Pruitt Hall on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. North Alabama is host to Lee on Thursday.
