LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Senior
Jordyn Whiddon hammered two homeruns in back-to-back innings to lead West Alabama to 10-1 win over Tuskegee in game one of a doubleheader at the UWA Softball Complex on Wednesday. The Tigers completed the sweep by posting 11 runs in the second inning to win game two 12-3.
Â
West Alabama improves to 5-3 overall, while Tuskegee opens its season at 0-2.
Â
"We love winning, especially at home," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson. "Winning's fun and we had an opportunity to win today when we didn't play our best. We've been able to hang our hat on our defense, but today was not our best defensive effort. I felt like Giana came out and pitched really well in the first game and our hitters were patient enough to get some good hits."
Â
Whiddon's first homer came in the bottom of the third inning and was a solo shot to centerfield to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Ashley Stassin and
Miriah Chavez each added homeruns of their own in the same inning with Stassin bringing in two runs and Chavez one.
Â
Treasure Rodriguez put the Tigers on the board with a two-run double in the first inning, and
Lacey Santiago contributed a two-run double in the third.
Â
Whiddon's second homer added two more runs in the fourth.
Â
The Tigers fell behind by two runs in game two before their 11 run rally on six hits and three errors. Chavez, Stassin and
Libby Davis each recorded doubles in the game, while Stassin added three more RBIs.
Â
Giana Cavallaro (1-1) picked up her first win in the circle for UWA, pitching all five innings of game one. She struck out four and gave up one run on five hits.
Alli Hall (2-2) struck out six in game two, pitching through four innings to get the win.
Â
"I love the fact that we have three people in the circle that we're gaining confidence in," said Atkinson.
Â
"Giana got some more action today and pitched well, and Stassin did well in relief. Alli didn't have her best day, but she's going to be one of those people that will help us win a bunch of games in conference." Â Â
Â
Karisa Foye took the loss for Tuskegee in game one, allowing eight earned runs and eight hits. Acey Spence picked up her first loss of the season as well, allowing 12 earned runs in game two.
Â
West Alabama will open Gulf South Conference action against Delta State in a three game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
