CARROLLTON, Ga. – Taylor Beverly scored 21 points and collected 12 rebounds to lead West Georgia to a 71-54 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Thursday at The Coliseum.
West Georgia improves to 18-10 overall and 13-9 in GSC play. The Wolves will host North Alabama Tuesday in the first round of the 2015 GSC Tournament. West Alabama ends its season with a 10-16 overall record, 7-15 in the GSC. The Tigers ended the year on a seven-game losing streak.
"We haven't played very good basketball for the last four weeks. Somehow we lost our drive," UWA head coach
Rusty Cram said. "We had some success early in the year because of effort and hustle, but the last month or so we haven't been a very good basketball team."
Needing a win to keep their hopes alive for the final seed in the GSC Tournament, the Tigers jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first four minutes, but suffered through a pair of extended scoring draughts while converting just 9-of-31 (29 percent) from the floor in the first half.
The Tigers ended up making just 20-of-61 field goal attempts (32 percent) for the game and could get no closer than 10 points in the final 20 minutes. West Georgia's biggest lead of the game was 18 points with just over a minute to play.
Both teams turned the ball over just 10 times, but UWG made the most of those opportunities by scoring 11 points off Tiger miscues. UWA managed just two points off turnovers.
"The top teams in this league, and that includes West Georgia, are those that have players who have been in the program and a system for four or five years," Cram said. "Those are
teams. You can beat a group of athletes, but it's hard to beat a
team." Aysha Harris followed Beverly with 18 points and Marion Lemonnier chipped in 10 more for West Georgia.
Britney McCloud scored 23 points before fouling out with 1:54 to play to lead West Alabama scoring.
Kelcia Bufkin was the only other Tiger to score in double figures with 10 points. McCloud was UWA's top rebounder with seven.
