UNA Sweeps GSC Baseball Doubleheader From West Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – Without the aid of an extra base hit in either game, North Alabama used 15 singles to record a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over West Alabama Saturday at Mike Lane Field. UNA won the opener, 6-2, and the nightcap, 3-2.

North Alabama improved to 9-3 overall with the sweep, 3-2 in GSC play. West Alabama lost for the third consecutive time to drop to 10-7 and 4-4. The Lions and Tigers are scheduled to complete the series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

UNA scored five unearned runs in the third inning of the first game and were never threatened the rest of the way. The Lions used three hits, two walks and a Tiger error to take the 5-0 lead.

UWA picked up single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before the Lions scored one more time in the eighth. Tanner Rainey doubled and scored on a Nick Delgado single in the sixth. Adam Chamblee doubled in the seventh, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Jack Cockrum groundout.

North Alabama jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, but West Alabama took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Delgado and Brock Montgomery singled to open the inning and advanced on a fielder's choice by Daniel Bolte. A sacrifice fly by Chamblee and a ground out to second base off the bat of Jake Bush drove in the two runs.

Kyle Hubbuch drove in the game winning runs in the finale for UNA with a fifth-inning single, chasing Jake Smith and Dylan Calhoun, who had both singled.

UNA starters Brantley Claunch (3-0) and Riley Sanderson (3-1) picked up the pitching wins. Austin Carpenter picked his first save in game one, while Jacob Westerhouse earned his second save in game two. UWA starters Jorge Cruz (2-2) and Fernando Gonzalez (3-1) absorbed the losses.

Montgomery had two hits for the Tigers, including a leadoff double in the seventh inning of the nightcap. Luigi Mendez, Rainey, Delgado and Cockrum all had a pair of hits for UWA.

Kevin Hall had three hits for UNA in first game, driving in a run. Calhoun and Hubbuch had two hits apiece in the second game.
