VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State used six walks and four hits to score 11 runs in the second inning to defeat West Alabama, 14-0, and complete a Gulf South Conference softball series sweep Sunday at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
Valdosta State, ranke second in the nation, improved its win streak to 16 consecutive games. The Lady Blazers are 26-2 overall and 12-1 in GSC play. West Alabama dips to 9-14 and 3-11.
The Blazers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on one hit. Heather Robinson singled through the left side to drive in two runs. Later in the same inning, pinch runner Brittany Smith scored on a wild pitch.
VSU ended with seven hits. Kiley Rusen was the only Blazer to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and a run driven in.
Scarlett Wright and
Lacey Santiago accounted for the only Tiger hits, each finishing 1-for-2 at the plate.
Caitlyn Calhoun (15-1) pitched all five innings for Valdosta State, striking out eight batters on the way to earning the win.
Alli Hall (6-10) walked five and allowed nine runs to take the loss.
Giana Cavallaro entered in the second inning, walking five and not allowing a hit.
Ashley Stassin pitched the final two innings, allowing just two hits.
West Alabama will return to action to take on Stillman College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday. Game one is set for 2 p.m. in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
