Ashley Stassin totaled three home runs and picked up a win in the circle in game two to lead the Tigers to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Tuskegee on Wednesday. Tigers hit around the order for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 10-6 victory in game one and took game two 17-1 in five innings.
Â
West Alabama improves to 12-16 overall, while Tuskegee falls to 8-9
Â
"Any time you go out on the road and win it's awesome," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson.
Â
"We came out a little sluggish in game one. We didn't do anything horrible; we just didn't start playing the game until the seventh inning. In the second game, our hitters came out with a great game plan and were able to execute. We were just able to take the momentum at the end of the first game and carry it through all five innings of the second."
Â
Stassin had a solo shot in game one and two two-run homers in back-to-back at bats in game two. She now owns six home runs in three games; 14 on the season. She ended the day 5-for-9 at the plate. Stassin (4-1) picked up the win in game two allowing only one unearned run and four hits, while not walking a single batter.
Â
"The ball must look like a beach ball to Stassin, because every ball she hit seemed like she crushed it," Atkinson said.
Â
"Six home runs in three games; who does that? Not only did she come out and hit great, she also pitched incredibly well today. She commanded the zone and gave our defense opportunity to make plays."
Â
Tuskegee claimed five total runs in the first and third innings of game one, after UWA took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Â
Scarlett Wright and Stassin belted back-to-back homeruns in the fourth to cut the deficit to down to two before Tuskegee home run by Cassandra Denson built the lead back to 6-3.
Â
The Tigers took full advantage of three errors and three hits, including a double by
Lydia North and two singles by
Libby Davis and
Lacey Santiago, to claim their second and final lead.
Â
In game two, UWA scored in every inning except for one with 14 hits as every Tiger in the lineup earned an RBI. North added two more runs in the second game, giving her five on the day in five at bats. She led the team with three stolen bases on the day.
Â
Libby Davis brought in three runs on a home run in the of the second, before Stassin added her final two homers in the second and fourth. Â The Tigers closed with eight runs in the top of the fifth to end the day.
                      Â
Alli Hall (7-12) took the win in the circle for the Tigers in game one with four strike outs. She battled through giving up five earned runs and seven hits through all seven innings.
Â
"Alli is one of those pitchers who typically gets better the deeper into the game she goes," said Atkinson. "I just really wanted to see if she could work her way out of falling behind. Fortunately the offense also answered the challenge."
Â
West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference action to take on Christian Brothers University in a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is set for 2 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
