West Alabama Wins a Wild One, 10-9, Over 24th Ranked Lee

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Jake Bush raced home on a wild pitch with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give West Alabama a 10-9 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over 24th ranked Lee University Sunday at Tartt Field.

The victory secured a win of the three-game GSC series for the Tigers, who improved to 12-8 overall and 6-5 in the league. Lee dropped to 12-6-1 and 4-6-1.

West Alabama jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings, but Lee scored four runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to take an 8-7 advantage into the eighth.

"This was a day of survival," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "After giving up a big lead we showed a lot of heart and character putting ourselves back in a position to win the game at the end.

"That is a huge win for us in a series we knew was big before it ever started," Rundles said. "Lee is a good baseball team. You never have enough runs when you play these guys."

Jack Cockrum hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right center with one out in the bottom of the first inning, to give UWA a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, the Tigers used four singles and a sacrifice fly from Parker Madden to stake starting pitcher Fernando Gonzalez for a 4-0 advantage.

A two-run double by Nick Delgado in the bottom of the fourth inning gave UWA a 6-0 lead before the Flames wrapped a pair of doubles around a UWA error and a run-scoring wild pitch to cut the Tiger lead to 6-4 and chase Gonzalez.

UWA scored a single run in the fifth when a Tanner Rainey single drove in Bush, who had walked and moved to second on a wild pitch, to give UWA a 7-4 lead.

Four singles and a pair of runs scored on balks ended up being a four-run seventh for Lee and gave the Flames their first lead at 8-7. The Flames added a single run in the eighth to go up 9-7 with closer Kyle Briner on the mound.

A two-run homer from Madden in the bottom of the eighth chased Briner and tied the game at 9-9. It was Madden's first of the year.

Rainey, who is the closer for UWA, sat Lee down in order in the ninth to give the Tigers an opportunity to win.

Bush was hit by a Jacob Potts' pitch with one out, moved to second on a single by Luigi Mendez and then to third when Rainey drew a base on balls. Bush scored the game-winner when Potts 1-2 offering to Daniel Bolte skipped past catcher Josh Tate.

Madden and Delgado had three hits each for West Alabama. Delgado has five hits in his last eight plate appearances. Madden drove in three runs and Delgado two. Bolte had a pair of hits and an RBI, while Mendez chipped in two more hits.

Rainey (2-1) picked up the win in relief for the Tigers. Potts (1-2) took the loss.

Luke Toms had three hits for Lee, while Siosi Poti and Ben Holland chipped in two more. Toms and Holland drove in two runs each.

West Alabama continues a four-game home stand Wednesday when Spring Hill visits Tartt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
