JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University Kelly Robey pitched the no-hitter while striking out 10 West Alabama batters to lead the Bulldogs to 5-0 Gulf South Conference softball victory at Fesmire Field Sunday. Â
Â
Union gets the series win to improve to 25-15 overall and 13-13 in the GSC, after splitting the doubleheader on Saturday. West Alabama drops to 17-22 and 9-17.
Â
It was Robey's (22-10) sixth shutout of the year; third no-hitter. She walked three batters marking the only bases reached by the Tigers.
Â
Madison Tennyson put the Bulldogs on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with a single to left field to score Megan Wolinsky. Caylee Crews later scored on a wild pitch in the same inning to extend the lead to 2-0.
Â
Tennyson singled again in the fourth inning to bring in Alex Williams and lift the lead to 3-0. Williams recorded her second run on a passed ball in the sixth, followed by a RBI single from Summer Cross singled to give Union its fifth run.
Â
Union finished with 10 hits, while neither team committed an error. Tennyson finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run. Williams led with two runs while going 2-for-3.
Â
Alli Hall (9-16) gave up three earned runs through three innings to record the loss in the circle for UWA. Â Â
Â
"It goes without saying that if you don't get hits, then you won't have a chance to score runs," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson.
Â
"We just didn't show up today. Their pitcher is good. She was in the zone today and really kept us off balance. We just have to gear up for our mid-week games and find a way to win against West Florida. Every win is important at this point in the season."
Â
West Alabama softball remains on the road Tuesday to face Miles College in a non-conference doubleheader in Birmingham, Ala. The first pitch for game one is set for 4 p.m.
