LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A nine run rally by West Alabama in the final three innings was not enough to overcome 17 hits, including four homeruns, by West Florida as the Argonauts when on to win 12-10 in Gulf South Conference softball action Monday at the UWA Softball Complex.
West Florida wins the series 2-1 to improve to 17-29 overall and 9-20 in the GSC. West Alabama, who is still seeking one of the six bids to the conference tournament in seventh place, falls to 18-24 and 10-19.
Trailing eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, UWA posted six runs that were capped off by a grand slam from
Treasure Rodriguez to cut the Argos lead to 11-9. Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with six RBI, having hit a RBI single in the first inning that put the Tigers up 1-0 and a RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth.
West Florida strung together two five run innings that featured four home runs by four different hitters. Jenna Belser had a two run shot in the third, followed by a three run homer from Jessica Wilkinson to give the Argos a 5-1 lead.
Kaylan Rowell added two more runs with her home run, as Kayln Chapman followed up with a solo shot in the sixth. Rowell finished 3-for-4 with two runs.
Ashley Stassin trailed Rodriguez with two RBI's, both on singles that came in the fifth and sixth innings. She finished 2-for-3 with one run.
Libby Davis led the Tigers in hits, going 3-for-4 in the ninth spot with two runs.
"We were an out away from being run ruled, but then we really got after it," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson.
"Our girls did a great job of not quitting and getting runners on base and Treasure got one to leave the yard. Any time you score 10 runs you feel that you have a chance to win, but today we needed 13. We scored nine of our 10 runs in the last three innings, so there is a lot of fight in this team. Now we'll prepare for UAH this weekend and see what happens."
Becca Taylor (9-8) took the win by striking out four batters, walking one and allowing four runs on eight hits.
Stassin (8-4) took the loss in the circle for the Tigers, giving up six runs on 10 hits through three innings.
West Alabama softball will close out its regular season against in-state conference rival Alabama Huntsville in a three-game series beginning in a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is set for 3 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
