Tigers Sweep Hawks, Win Streak Now at 14 Games

ROME, Ga. – West Alabama used 12 hits to score 15 runs in game one and then battled back from behind to take game two on the way to a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over Shorter Friday at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex. UWA won game one, 15-0, and the second game, 5-3.

The sweep extended No. 24 West Alabama's win streak to 14 games and improved the Tigers to 25-8 overall and 17-5 in the GSC. The Tigers haven't lost since dropping the second game of a doubleheader to Lee back on March 7. Shorter is 13-14 and 9-11.

Jorge Cruz (7-2) shut Shorter out for seven innings before giving way to Tanner Rainey in the eighth for the win in game one. Cruz would only need one run, but his teammates provided him 15. Cruz struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter. Shorter starter Travis McPherson (0-2) took the loss.

"Jorge really threw the baseball well," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "He was in complete control of the game and didn't allow an extra base hit.

"Fernando didn't have his best stuff, but he kept us in the game and Brock Ward did a great job considering he lost his grandmother Thursday morning and is dealing with things way more important than baseball."

Rainey belted two home runs, the eighth and ninth of the season, in the first game to drive in four runs. Mitch Holgate hit his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot on a 0-2 pitch in a six-run seventh for UWA in game one. Eddie Kieffer was 3-for-4 with three RBI as UWA sent 23 batters to the plate in the seventh and eighth innings.

"We had a hard time seeing the ball early in game one, but were able to make the correct adjustments and get locked in," Rundles said. "Rainey and Kieffer were huge offensively and Holgate continues to be the silent monster just doing the things you need to do to win."

Shorter lead 1-0 after three innings in game two before RBI singles from Luigi Mendez and Rainey in fourth gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. UWA stretched the lead to 3-1 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Bolte.

The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by George Ragsdale, his second of the year.

West Alabama responded with two runs in the seventh inning for the final margin. Holgate had an RBI single and Kieffer doubled in another run.

"We really held our composure when we fell behind and also when we lost the lead," Rundles said. "We responded well on the road and that's the sign of a baseball team playing well."

Starter Fernando Gonzalez (7-1) pitched 6.2 innings and struck out nine to earn the pitching win in the second game. Ward recorded the final Shorter out on a fly ball to center to pick up his first save.

Kieffer had four hits in the two games, while Holgate and Rainey had three. Holgate also scored five runs and stole three bases.

Zach Santos had four hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Shorter offensive attack.

The Tigers and Hawks are scheduled to wrap up the series with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon central time.
