ROME, Ga. – Pitcher Amanda Blanchard struck out 12 batters in game two, to lead Shorter University to 6-1 victory over West Alabama in Gulf South Conference doubleheader softball action at the Alto Park Softball Complex Friday. Four runs in the fourth inning of game one lifted the Hawks to 6-3 win.
The losses snap a six game win streak for West Alabama, who drops to 15-18 overall and 7-15 in the GSC. Now on a four game win streak, Shorter improves to 24-9 and 14-8.
Blanchard (13-1) struck out seven batters looking to pick up the win in game two. She gave up one earned run on seven hits and walked one.
Maddie Bray (8-6) received the win in game one, allowing two runs on four hits and struck out three. Kalei Kimbreall picked up her third save of the season, taking only one earned run in the final two innings.
The Hawks made it on the board first on a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first. Four run in the fourth inning, sparked by a two run double by Maggie Meachum, extended the lead to 5-0. a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Lydia North and
Scarlett Wright cut the deficit to three runs, each scoring a run on a single in the top of the fifth. Both teams exchanged one last run in the bottom of the sixth and the top of the seventh.
The Tigers took its only lead of the day at 1-0 in the top of the first inning of game one on a RBI single by
Ashley Stassin.
Meachum led Shorter on a three run response in the bottom of the inning with a single run double, as well as scoring on an error. The Hawks finished the sweep with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Alli Hall (8-13) pitched the complete game one to take the loss. She allowed two earned runs, struck out one and walked four.
Ashley Stassin (6-2) took the loss in game two, while also pitching a complete game. Stassin struck out four and allowed three earned runs.
Scarlett Wright led the offense, finishing 3-of-7 with one RBI.
