Tampa Ends West Alabama’s Baseball Season With 13-9 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Tampa built an 11-3 lead after four innings and then held off West Alabama to notch a 13-9 college baseball victory over the Tigers late Saturday night at Tartt Field in the NCAA Division II South Regional.

The win leaves the Spartans (38-13) as the only undefeated team in the regional field. Florida Tech (38-12) will have to beat Tampa twice on Sunday for a shot at a trip to the Division II World Series.

Tampa and Florida Tech will play at noon at Tartt Field. If a second game is needed it would begin at 3:30 p.m.

Fourth-ranked West Alabama ends its season 42-11, three wins shy of the school record for victories, but with Gulf South Conference regular season and tournament titles.

"It didn't end like we wanted it to, but what happened tonight in no way takes away from what a special season these guys put together," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "These guys have taken this program back to the level we are accustomed to and we especially owe these eight senior a debt of gratitude for leading the way."

Tampa jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning, but West Alabama tied the score with three runs in the second. A pair of UWA errors and three hits plated three more Spartan runs in the second. A five-run fourth inning essentially put the game away for Tampa.

West Alabama scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the eighth before Tanner Rainey blasted his school-record 19th home run, a three-run blast in the ninth to cut the Tampa lead to the final margin.

Tampa starter Brad Hencke (7-1) pitched 7.1 innings to earn the win, allowing nine hits and five runs while walking three and striking out four. UWA starter Jorge Cruz (9-3) took the loss.

Rainey was 3-for-5 in his final game in a West Alabama uniform, driving in three runs while coming up a triple short of the cycle. Eddie Kieffer, Daniel Bolte and Luigi Mendez had two hits apiece in a 13-hit Tiger attack. Adam Chamblee drove in three runs.

Casey Scoggins, Stephen Dezzi, Brett Jones and Giovanny Alfonzo each had two hits in a 12-hit Tampa offensive attack. Scoggins, Alfonzo and Chris Pagliarulo all doubled for the Spartans.
