Ninth Inning Magic Strikes Again for UWA in 3-2 Win over UWG

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Adam Chamblee scored from first base on a throwing error by West Georgia pitcher Chris Burdette in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift West Alabama to a 3-2 college baseball victory over West Georgia Monday in the winner's bracket final of the Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament.

With the score tied 2-2, Chamblee led off the Tiger half of the ninth with a single. Parker Madden then bunted down the first base line in an effort sacrifice and move Chamblee to second. Instead Burdette's throw sailed down the right field line and Chamblee never stopped running to score the game winner.

"The hit by Adam (Chamblee) to lead off the bottom of the ninth was obviously big because it puts pressure on the defense in a tie game," UWA head coach Gary Rundle said. "Parker (Madden) then got the ball down and we were able to capitalize on a mistake."

West Alabama improved to 39-9 and will play in the tournament championship game Tuesday at noon versus Alabama Huntsville, Delta State or West Georgia pending the outcome of Monday's last two games. West Georgia dropped to 33-14.

West Alabama has now won back-to-back games in the ninth inning, eliminating West Florida with final inning heroics on Sunday with a 4-3 victory.

Neither starting pitcher figured in a decision, but both UWA's Gandy Stubblefield and UWG's Brandon Goldsmith both produced impressive final lines. Stubblefield did not allow an earned run and scattered four hits while striking out five. Goldsmith allowed two runs and just two hits while striking out five.

"What you had today was a good old fashioned pitching duel," Rundles said. "Goldsmith was terrific and so was Gandy. When you look at the stat lines, both starters deserved better.

"We had to wait until our opportunity came. They made a couple of mistakes and we were able to take advantage," Rundles said. "(UWG coach) Skip Fite is doing a great job with that baseball team. They are very good."

Tiger reliever Tanner Rainey (4-1) picked up the win, not allowing a hit and striking out three in 1.2 innings pitched. Burdette (3-1) absorbed the loss.

West Georgia scored a single run in the first when Artemis Kadkhodian singled with one out, moved to third on a single by Sumner McWhorter and scored on a throwing error by UWA catcher Eddie Kieffer.

West Alabama tied the game in the fifth when Rainey was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single by Jake Bush, the first hit of the game for the Tigers. UWG regained the lead at 2-1 when Tyler Hutch singled to open the eighth, moved to second on a wild pitch, was bunted over to third and scored on a passed ball.

West Alabama managed just three hits and West Georgia four. There were no extra base hits in the game.
