LIVINGSTON, Ala. – With one minute left to play, University of West Alabama freshman
Mia Harvey netted the game winning goal to lift the Tigers to a 1-0 upset over No. 21 Saint Leo University at Tiger Stadium on Sunday.
West Alabama improves to 2-1, while Saint Leo drops to 2-2-1.
Harvey's goal, her second of the season, came on a header off of a corner kick by
Katy Morris. The senior, Morris, landed her second assist of the year.
UWA goalkeeper
Issy Foster (2-1) set a season high with seven saves, facing 17 total shots and marking her second consecutive shutout of the year. Abby Evans (0-1) made six saves before allowing the game winning goal to take the loss. She faced 12 shots by the Tiger offense.
Harvey finished 3-for-4 shots on-goal, followed by
Kirsten Reilly with 3-for-3. Arielle Kabangu led the Lions with four shots on-goal in six attempts.
"We embraced the challenge of facing a team that went to the regional finals last year and their physicality," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr. "I thought that we matched up well with them, and the girls played with something to prove today. I don't think this win has fully set in yet, but we will give the ladies time to celebrate before we turn our attention to opening conference play."
West Alabama women's soccer will return to action when they open Gulf South Conference play on Sunday at Alabama Huntsville. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
