HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – University of West Alabama junior
Kirsten Reilly scored the game-winning goal in the 13
th minute to lead the Tigers to a 2-0 victory in the Gulf South Conference women's soccer opener against the University of Alabama Huntsville on Sunday.
It is the third straight shutout victory for the West Alabama as they improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the GSC. Alabama Huntsville drops to 3-3-1 and 0-2.
"We are very proud of the work and commitment of the team," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr. "We had a specific strategy today and were able to implement it well. I thought
Kirsten Reilly was a different class and provided the penetration for our attacks throughout the match."
Reilly's goal was her second of the season, first game-winner, and came on an assist from sophomore
Nina Coleman. Freshman
Mia Harvey tacked on the unassisted insurance goal with two and half minutes remaining in the match, marking her third goal this year.
The Tigers out-shot the Chargers 17-8 with junior goalkeeper
Issy Foster (3-1) making four saves to complete her third shutout this season. She has not allowed a goal in 270 minutes of action.
Larae Breaux (3-3-1) made five saves but took her second straight loss. Reilly led UWA 3-for-5 shots on goal, while Riley Ridgeway led UAH 2-for-2.
"We now must take the positives with another clean sheet and focus on an important week," Orr said.
West Alabama women's soccer will remain on the road to face Peach Belt Conference opponent Columbus State on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. in Columbus, Ga.
