CLEVELAND, Miss. – University of West Alabama junior
Natalie Mooney netted her first career game-winning goal to lead the Tigers to 2-0 victory over Delta State University in Gulf South Conference women's soccer action Friday.
West Alabama improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the GSC. Delta Stat dips to a three game losing skid to fall to 1-5-1 and 0-3.
Mooney's goal came three minutes into the second half on a deflection off of the Statesman's crossbar. It was her third goal of the season.
Katy Morris added her fifth goal of the season in the 62
nd minute on an assist by Kristen Reilly. In total, the UWA offense out-shot Delta State 15-7.
Goalkeeper
Issy Foster (4-2) led the Tiger defense to its fourth shutout of the season with six saves. Statesmen keeper Ravin Hosley (0-0-1) entered in the match in the 19
th minute to replace Taylor Taffo. Hosley made four stops, but allowed both goals to take the loss.
"The team showed great character today," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr.
"Credit to Delta Stat, they played well the first half, however we were productive at half time and changed a few things. In the second half we deserved our goals for our bravery and attitude. There are no easy games in this league and now we prepare for another one on Sunday."
West Alabama women's soccer remains on the road to take on GSC opponent Mississippi College on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. in Cleveland, Miss.
