MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Lincoln Memorial's Claire Leasure scored the golden goal in the second overtime period to defeat West Alabama 4-3 in the 2015 season opener.
UWA begins its season 0-1, while LMU lifts to 1-0.
The Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals by
Rianna Gurvitz and
Beth Preston. Both goals came within three minutes of each other in the first 10 minutes of action.
Kirsten Reilly assisted Gurvitz in UWA's first goal of the season, while
Haleigh McDuff assisted on Preston's goal.
LMU answered with a high arcing shot over the keeper from Michelle Hunter in the 22
nd minute, while Maddy Nagy tied the match at 2-2 with a goal in the top left corner for in the 35
th minute.
Mia Harvey put UWA back on top in the 71
st minute. It was each Harvey and Preston's first collegiate goals.
Olivia Thompson scored the equalizer for the Railsplitters in regulation with less than 10 minutes to play.
LMU goalie Kathryn Lundy picked up the season opening win, while making four saves. UWA keeper
Issy Foster starts out 0-1, after making three saves.
West Alabama women's soccer will open its home season on Monday against Georgia Southwestern out of the Peach Belt Conference. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.
