LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Seab Webster led Alabama Huntsville with 33 points to edge-out a 74-68 overtime victory over West Alabama in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action at Pruitt Hall on Saturday.
Alabama Huntsville improves to 15-5 overall and remains first in the GSC standings at 12-3. It was the third overtime showdown for West Alabama this season as it dips to 11-10 and 7-8. The Chargers entered the game second in the league, averaging 87.5 points per game, but the Tiger defense limited the Chargers to 60 points in regulation.
"I really thought holding them to 60 points in regulation was our shot to win the game, but we missed some chances at the end of the second half," said UWA head coach
Allen Sharpe.
"Webster about single handedly beat us. He did this last year to us in the conference tournament final, grant it, it wasn't 33 points. We felt like we had to keep their 3-point makes down, because they are averaging about 10 a game, but we ended up giving up 14 to them tonight. We just didn't do a good enough job defending the three."
UAH finished 14-of-33 three-point shooting, as Webster hit 9-of-15. He went on to tally eight of the Chargers' 14 points in overtime, as he sank both of his 3-point attempts in extra minutes.
Seven of the Chargers' nine field goals came from behind the 3-point arc in the first half to remain within striking distance of UWA, who led 26-25 at half time. The Tigers had led by as many as seven points in the opening five minutes, but kept pace by also hitting nine field goals, however only three 3-point field goals. West Alabama kept the Chargers away from the free throw line completely in the half, while hitting 5-of-7 at the charity stripe.
Only three Chargers had points in the first half. Webster accounted for four of UAH's 3-pointers on six attempts to go into the break with 14 points. Brandon Roberts tallied 3-of-5 for nine points. Roberts finished with 12 points for UAH, hitting 4-of-11 from the field.
Billy Ingram led the Tigers with six points and five rebounds at the half. UWA led the rebounding effort 17-12. Ingram totaled nine points with five rebounds.
Alabama Huntsville gained its momentum in the first 10 minutes of the second half, building its largest lead of five points. West Alabama recaptured a three point lead in the final seven minutes, but UAH battled back to tie the game at 60-60 with 1:36 left to play. Neither team was able to find the basket in the final minute to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Chargers were 4-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-4 from the 3-point line. UWA was 3-of-8 and 2-of-3. Both teams finished with 29 boards each.
