LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama men's basketball dominated both ends of the court Monday in Pruitt Hall to defeat Gulf South Conference opponent Lee University 80-63 for its third straight home win. Five Tigers posted double-digit scoring numbers as the team went on to lead 40-29 in rebounds and 8-3 in blocked shots.
UWA improves to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in the GSC, wrapping up a five game home stand. Lee drops its fourth straight game to fall to 4-9 and 2-6.
The Tigers combined to shoot 26-of-55 (47 percent) from the field and 11-of-19 (58 percent) from the 3-point line.
Simeon Dennis led the offense with 16 points. He sank all four of his 3-point field goal attempts, hitting 5-of-7 from the field.
Dakari Mayo notched the team's first double-double of the year with 14 points and a season high of 14 boards. Furthermore on defense, he contributed five of UWA's eight blocked shots.
"It's great that we scored 80 points, but we more thrilled that we held them to 63," said UWA head coach
Allen Sharpe.
"The last few games we've been able to hold people, and in the conference stats we've finally gotten into first in team defense. That is something we really take pride in. We've also done better at finding a rotation and not playing as many guys. That might cause some hurt feelings, but that's just the way it goes. A lot of times, though, when you find that rotation, team chemistry gets better because they know what's coming when it's game time."
Jake Jobling also totaled 14 points hitting four of his six field goal attempts all from behind the 3-point arc.
Cannon Edwards reached his season high of points scored with 11, followed by
Deontaye Ewing with 10.
Acie Vance facilitated the offense with a season high of 10 assists, while sinking nine points.
The Tigers forced 13 turnovers leading 23-10 on points off turnovers. Ewing led with three steals, followed by Vance with two.
"Our scoring has been much better in the past few games scoring 80 or more points," Sharpe said.
"We felt like we had the personnel to score tonight. Acie made a big difference with 10 assists, but with Cannon, Jake and Simeon all making some three's, it makes things so much easier. Dakari has also really come on here late in these past few games. He has always made a difference defensively in the paint, but its better now that he's been able to score. I told these guys that they've messed up, because now we are going to expect them to play like this in every game."
West Alabama men's hoops will take to the road on Saturday when it takes on West Florida in the first of a five game road swing. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. in Pensacola, Fla.
