West Alabama Dominates No. 24 West Georgia, 31-7

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Austin Grammer stayed hot, the West Alabama defense didn't allow a West Georgia touchdown and Tiger special teams scored twice as the Tigers pounded No. 24 West Georgia, 31-7, in Gulf South Conference football Saturday at University Stadium.

The win was the third straight for West Alabama and improved the Tigers to 4-1 in GSC play, 4-3 overall. The Tigers also snapped an 18-game home winning streak for streak West Georgia (4-3, 1-3) and handed Wolves' head coach Will Hall a third consecutive loss for the first time in his head coaching career.

"This is a huge win for us against a very good football team that was picked to win the conference," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "After a shaky start our coaches and players just kept believing.

"The culture of our program is not to flinch and our guys didn't," Gilliland said. "Not flinching isn't just about tough times, but also when things are going well. What this win did was make next week even bigger."

West Alabama returns home to host Florida Tech (4-1, 2-1) Saturday at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

West Alabama rang up 413 yards of total offense while limiting West Georgia to just 206. The Wolves lone touchdown came when Marcus Sayles intercepted Grammer and returned is 81 yards to put UWG ahead 7-0 less than two minutes into the game. Jordan Bennett hit a 22-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to make it 7-3 UWG at the break.

Sayles score was the last time West Georgia would set foot in the endzone. Nine UWG drives ended in punts. The other five culminated with turnovers as West Alabama recovered four Wolves fumbles and intercepted a pass while dominating the line of scrimmage.

"We challenged our guys to get locked in and execute the game plan," UWA defensive coordinator Nathan Burton said. "We had a good plan, the guys played hard, executed and had fun."

Grammer completed 31-of-40 passes for 338 yards, including touchdown completions of 8 yards to Corey Davis and 80 yards to Tray Fletcher in the third quarter.

"There is one word that describes Austin Grammer and that is 'warrior'," Gilliland said. "He made plays and he is the leader of this offense."

West Alabama's special teams capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter when Donta Armstrong returned a punt 69 yards for a score and Greg Thomas cashed in on a 15-yard scoop and score when West Georgia fumbled on the ensuing kickoff. Bennett kicked all four extra points."

"I have got to get this out there, our defense pitched a shutout and it was me who threw them a touchdown pass," Grammer said. "They have a great defensive front, but our front seven on defense was awesome today. The guys on my side of the ball weren't too bad either."

West Alabama record five quarterback sacks, two by Darius Ellis and 1.5 by A.J. Skinner. The Tigers also rang up eight tackles for loss, with Ellis leading the way there as well with 3.5. Tavarious Hutchinson led UWA with six tackles and Ellis had 5.5.

In addition to Thomas's scoop and score, Hutchinson, Qyen Griffin and Charles Bester recovered fumbles. Taderion Myhand intercepted a pass and returned it 33 yards and Dee Virgin broke up three passes.

"We just did our job against some great players," Ellis said. "We have a great group of guys in our locker room, a brotherhood."

Lakendric Thomas ran for 54 yards on 19 carries to lead all rushers. Lamarcus Franks finished with 43 on 12 trips for West Georgia.

Davis finished with seven receptions for 90 yards, while Armstrong caught seven more for 53. Fletcher had six grabs for 134 yards.

UWG starting quarterback Will Gardner was 8-of-17 for 76 yards passing. Backup Willie Candler was 8-of-10 for 103 yards. Qa Walker caught five passes for 32 yards. Laronji Vason led Wolves tacklers with 10.
