LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Kirsten Reilly grabbed her fifth and sixth scores of the season, lifting West Alabama women's soccer to a 2-0 Gulf South Conference victory of Shorter at Tiger Stadium on Sunday.
The Tigers improve to 8-5-1 overall on the year, moving to 4-1-0 in the conference. The Hawks fall to 1-11-1 on the season, dropping to 0-7-1 in league play.
"Today was about coming out and getting the ball down to play," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "We got a goal early in the first half that relaxed us, but give credit to Shorter. They got the ball down and played some good soccer."
"Obviously, I was delighted to get the goal late in the second half to seal the match, but now we need to make sure we qualify for the conference tournament. It's a dogfight, and there are a lot of teams challenging for the top six. So, now we need to start to focus on Spring Hill and see if we can go down there and come away with three points."
Reilly put the Tigers on the board in the 16th minute by way of a penalty kick. The Tiger midfielder launched the set piece into the left side of the goal, giving UWA an early 1-0 advantage.
Haylee Frank secured a through ball to the right side of the field, placing a cross across the box to connect with Reilly on the other side. Reilly's shot beat the keeper to the lower left corner, improving West Alabama's lead to 2-0 in the 79thminute.
Issy Foster (8-5-1) made three saves on the day, picking up her fifth shutout of the year. Alden Powell (0-7-1) made four saves on 12 shots faced in the loss.
West Alabama will continue in GSC action, taking on Spring Hill College on Friday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
